WASHINGTON —Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis issued the following statement on the August 2009 Employment Situation report issued today:
“This past August, the economy lost 216,000 jobs — fewer than what most experts expected. The overall unemployment rate is now 9.7 percent. Last month’s jobs loss is an improvement from the average 700,000 jobs our economy was losing every month when this administration took office, but is still by no means acceptable.”

Secretary Duncan Announces $11.37 Billion in Title I, IDEA, and Vocational Rehabilitation Funds Available to States, Schools Ahead of Schedule
Delivering unprecedented resources to states and school districts, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today announced that more than $11 billion is now available to further save jobs and drive reforms. The Department of Education has made available ahead of schedule the second half of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding—$11.37 billion—in Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, IDEA, and Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) grants and provided further guidance to states and schools on use of funds, flexibility, and the need for collaboration across programs.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor has certified for release $200,767,125 in unemployment insurance (UI) modernization incentive funds to the state of Illinois. Illinois qualified for the remaining two-thirds of its share of the funds available under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) by including certain family-friendly provisions in its UI law.
“I am pleased that Illinois has made updates to its UI program to better meet the needs of today’s workers and their families,” said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. “This additional funding was made available in light of the state’s implementation of legislation allowing workers who leave jobs for compelling family reasons to receive UI benefits. The law also increases the benefits for unemployed workers with families.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention today announced plans to distribute $40 million to state health departments to help prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the money will be distributed through cooperative agreements to 49 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico to maximize prevention efforts such as:
- Creating or expanding state and local efforts to implement recommendations in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services HAI Action Plan

WASHINGTON- The Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service (RUS) announced today that they received almost 2,200 applications requesting nearly $28 billion in funding for proposed broadband projects reaching all 50 U.S. states and territories and the District of Columbia. This is the first round of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding aimed at expanding broadband access and adoption to help bridge the technological divide and create jobs building Internet infrastructure, with $4 billion available through loans, grants, and loan/grant combinations.

WASHINGTON – Recipients of funds disbursed by federal agencies under the $787 billion economic recovery program will be able to register at a government website beginning Monday, Aug. 17.
State and local governments, contractors, universities, non-profits and others that have received a grant, loan or contract of $25,000 or more under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 are required to register on the website, www.FederalReporting.gov. Individual recipients of Recovery funds are not required to register or report.

At 12:01 A.M. on August 17, 2009, www.federalreporting.gov will go live and recipients of Recovery funds will be able to register as the first step in the reporting process mandated by the Recovery Act. Simple registration should take approximately five minutes if recipients already have a DUNS number and CCR number. For more information on the pre-requisites for registering, visit FAQs.

WASHINGTON — During a visit to Iowa today, Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis announced a $521,910 grant to assist approximately 90 workers affected by layoffs at Featherlite Inc. located in Cresco, Iowa.
“This grant will help affected workers rejoin the labor force by providing them with top notch training and job-related services,” said Secretary Solis. “Iowans are an important part of the nation’s workforce, and they can count on the U.S. Department of Labor to ensure they have access to the employment resources they need and deserve.”

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today unveiled a new feature on Grants.gov to help users find and apply for The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant opportunities. Grants.gov contains information about finding and applying for all federal grant programs.
The launch of this Recovery Act feature on the homepage of Grants.gov will direct users to Recovery Act opportunities, other Recovery Act resources, upcoming Webinars and links to www.whitehouse.gov/recovery and www.recovery.gov.
