Five years ago, when the economy was humming, 5 percent of small businesses surveyed by the National Federation of Independent Business labeled “financing”—in other words, borrowing—as the biggest thorn in their paw. Fast-forward to today, in the aftermath of a recession that has broken records for unpleasantness and left lenders like CIT Group in deep trouble. How many small businesses consider borrowing problems their top concern now? Five percent.
This is not to say that borrowing’s a walk in the park—the volume of small-business loans is down 38 percent from last year. But there’s reason to believe it’s “less dire for smaller businesses” than the numbers show, according to Holly Wade, policy analyst at the business federation.

Rebuilding Southeast Michigan’s distressed economy certainly isn’t a task for the fainthearted.
As part of an ambitious agenda, the New Economy Initiative, created by 10 foundations last spring, wants to help launch 1,200 new companies over the next three years as part of a broad effort to rebuild the regional economy.

FLINT – Sometime next year, Michigan will lose its millionth job since the state’s economy began its downward slide in mid-2000. With a frenzy born of that desperation, the state is trying to rekindle the entrepreneurial spirit that made Dow, Kellogg and Ford household names.
That trio founded the state’s famous chemical, cereal and auto companies a century ago. These days, the state is doing what it can to foster a new generation of innovation.

The founder of 3SecondReceipts LLC expects to soon sell his new digital receipt system that replaces paper receipts with an online version to Drexel University in Philadelphia, where Ericson is a sophomore.

CANDLER — Pet identification tags have become a lot more expressive thanks to DogTagArt’s designs.
The new business uses a “crowd-sourcing” platform that allows artists, designers and pet lovers to upload full-color, original graphic art designed to fit on a round aluminum tag. If company founder Jack Carrier approves a design, it’s offered to customers.

The Paterson Administration announced a bunch of “Restore NY” grants today. And Troy’s Proctor’s Theater got $4 million. Although, in this case, restore means “fix the facade, tear the rest down and rebuild.” From the state press release:
Harry Tutunjian tweeted that he’s “thrilled” about the grant. It probably won’t go over so well with the group trying save the theater in its original form. The group recently proposed a plan for bring the theater back as a performance space.

Maryville, Mo. – Governor Jay Nixon will be attending the dedication ceremony at Northwest for its new Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9. The event will take place at the center, located on the north edge of campus west of North College Drive and south of West 16th Street. University officials along with other dignitaries representing government, center tenants and area economic development initiatives are expected to attend.
The 46,679-square-foot center has two synergistic components: a mixed-use technology business incubator and an academic facility. The incubator is designed to house several start-up companies, and the academic facility has been programmed to house Northwest’s new nanotechnology baccalaureate degree program, which began courses this fall.
